A Trans Asia Airways flight preparing to land at Magong Airport, crashes, killing at least 48 people. The plane, a twin engine turboprop plane crashed and caught fire in the Penghu Islands, off the western coast of Taiwan. in weather that was reported to be heavy rains. The flight took off from Kaohsiung and had been delayed prior to takeoff because of bad weather conditions connected to a typhoon that hit Tawan. According to Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration says the plane was carrying 54 passengers and four crew members. The plane’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been sent to Taipei. The Taiwan Aviation Safety Council says its too early to blame the typhoon for the crash and has just begun their investigation.

Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was traveling from Amsterdam to Malaysia when it went missing near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. U.S. officials say the aircraft was shot down by a “surface to air missile” fired from territory controlled by Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine. President Obama said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had the power to reduce the violence in the Ukraine, but chose not to do so. Prior to the plane crash, the Obama Administration placed further sanctions against the Russian government for its role in the current conflict in Ukraine. One American was among those killed in the crash.
Autism awareness was the focus of this liveshot filmed at our South Florida remote uplink studio in Fort Lauderdale. We welcomed Thomas D’eri, the co-founder & COO of Rising Tide Car Wash. Thomas was live on Al Jazeera America’s “Consider This.” D’eri and his family, through their business, Rising Tide Car Wash, provides jobs to youths with autism. Thomas D’eri’s brother, Andrew was diagnosed with autism at the age of three and was the inspiration in starting the business.
A new documentary entitled “Sounding the Alarm” portrays the “autism epidemic” and debuts Tuesday August 26th on Netflix, Amazon Prime and iTunes. The film explores the social, economic and medical hardships that those afflicted with autism and their families face in this country. The Rising Tide Car Wash is one of the positive stories in “Sounding the Alarm” as the company gives those with autism a chance to be productive in the workforce.

Our South Florida remote uplink studio in downtown Fort Lauderdale had the pleasure of welcoming to our studio set, Kymani Quarrie and his mother, Tania Dunbar. They were live on MSNBC with Melissa Harris-Perry this past weekend. Kymani was featured as the show’s “foot soldier” of the week in recognition for his charitable work in the community.
In 2010, at seven years old, Kymani, with the help of his mother, founded the non profit organization KQ Cares dedicated to helping the homeless. Kymani has hosted numerous food and clothing drives for the homeless, partnering with local charities in his community to distribute the goods. Kymani has gotten other children involved in his charitable work too by hosting a children’s fashion show and a basketball tournament.

Representative Thurston was our studio guest on MSNBC’s Politics Nation with the Reverend Al Sharpton. They, along with legal analyst Lisa Bloom, discussed Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” Law, coinciding with the one year anniversary of the George Zimmerman Verdict. In that case, Zimmerman was found not guilty in the murder of then 17 year old Trayvon Martin. The case and later the verdict, sparked outrage nationwide as many were calling for a repeal to this very controversial law. Perry Thurston led the charge to try to appeal this law back in March of this year.
